Our History

A Tradition of Service Continues

Tonya R. Parker and Mark D. Maltempie.Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home is owned by Tonya R. Parker and managed by Mark D. Maltempie. Along with their professional staff, they continue a long tradition of service to the communities of Charleston and the Kanawha Valley.

The funeral home was founded in 1929 by Tonya’s grandfather, Emmons A. Johnson. He was committed to the ideal that the funeral home would be “Known for Service.” This slogan became the foundation upon which future generations would build including the Cunningham family who owned the funeral home for over 45 years. In 1979, Tonya’s father, James E. Johnson, and her husband, R. Brent Parker, purchased the firm. Throughout the years, J.E., Brent and Tonya continually added innovative services and options to help families through the death of a loved one.

With the passing of J.E. Johnson in 2005 and Brent Parker in 2008, Tonya Parker is committed to carrying on her family’s legacy. The mission of the funeral home is the same as it was 80 years ago – to be known for service. And the staff at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson will continue to serve with the same compassion, attention to detail, and affordability that you have come to expect.
